Since its inception in 1974, Bread for the City (BFC) has been a committed and trusted Washington, DC community institution. What began as a volunteer-run free medical clinic in a cramped church basement has evolved into two state-of-the-art comprehensive centers serving over 36,000 Washingtonians annually who are living with low income.
For 50 years, Bread for the City’s story has been tied to that of the District’s. When medical care was denied and food and clothing scarce, BFC opened its doors. When public benefits were wrongfully withheld, it created legal and social services programs. When necessary, Bread for the City organized direct actions with community advocates to make lasting change. And when it came time to celebrate, laugh, play, learn, or dance, BFC hosted block parties, holiday markets, teach-ins, and workshops. It is a dependable, holistic community stronghold, embodying the values of dignity, respect, service, and justice. Always listening, always responding to the ever-changing social and economic needs of DC.
