In December, we asked you to donate to our food program so that we could expand distribution. Well, you heeded our call, made a gift, and we expanded as promised.
We are proud to report that as of January 19th, Bread for the City’s food program now distributes a five-day supply of groceries to households experiencing hunger rather than the three-day supply that we have traditionally provided. This is an AMAZING program shift that was only possible because of the kindness of our community–that’s you!

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your compassion and for your generosity. You are helping to make DC a better place for all of us.

Did you know that individuals 70 ½ years old or older can direct gifts from their IRAs to Bread for the City?! This opportunity may have great tax benefits to you, while simultaneously supporting the safety-net programs of Bread for the City.

Here are some important notes…

This summer, Bread for the City was chosen as beneficiary in a special community outreach project called Taste Your Music. Presented by two local arts organizations, Gourmet Symphony and Capital City Symphony, the program provides meals, performances, and fellowship to DC’s residents in need.

As part of Taste Your Music, this past June we welcomed a professional string quartet for a chamber music concert to our rooftop patio for the first time ever! The musicians performed for our staff and clients, sharing their talent and love for music with all present.

We schlepp a lot of food. Like, a lot. Every week, our drivers retrieve thousands of pounds of healthy, wholesome, delicious groceries from all across the city, which means our trucks get more than their fair share of wear and tear.

When it became obvious late last year that one of our two trusty box trucks wasn’t going to make it past Valentine’s Day, we reached out to our community for help covering this un-budgeted expense. And we were blown away by the response. I’m pleased to introduce our fab new truck (with lift!) in all its glory. BEHOLD!

WOW. Just WOW! That’s all there is to say about Saturday’s Good Hope Gala. We had a blast enjoying great food, bidding on awesome auction items, dancing the night away with the Brass Connection Band, and of course, raising money to support our poverty relief services in the District.

How much money, you ask? Together, we shattered all of our goals and raised a whopping $770,000 through our Good Hope Gala. Now that deserves a virtual round of applause!

The law firm of Covington & Burling has made the first gift for an upcoming $15 million expansion of Bread for the City’s Southeast Center on Good Hope Road. This $100,000 contribution will help Bread for the City (BFC) expand its civil legal services practice for low-income individuals living East of the River, and is part of Covington’s commitment with the DC Access to Justice Commission’s “Raising the Bar” Campaign to help bridge the legal services funding gap in the District of Columbia.
