Chris McCullough of the Washington Wizards visited Bread for the City’s SE Center last week, where he volunteered at its Food Pantry. After handing out food bags, he had quality time with clients and staff, taking pictures and chatting, proving that he really is such a good sport! We interviewed Chris to hear his thoughts on giving back, volunteering, and what he enjoys most about the holiday season.

Bread for the City wouldn’t exist without our dedicated volunteers. They serve as important partners in Bread for the City’s work by contributing hours of their time at our food pantries, orchard, clothing room, rooftop gardens, events, and centers to ensure we remain able to help 8,000 – 10,000 people each month. We can’t do it without them. Marie Hoffman is one of these amazing volunteers. After ten years serving at Bread, she shares her story.

This spring (March and April) at City Orchard, we have focused on spring cleaning and preparations for a fruitful summer. In addition to harvesting the greens University of the District of Columbia (UDC) generously offer us from their hydroponics greenhouses, we weeded, mulched, trellised and pruned our fruit trees and berries to prepare for the summer ahead.

Above all, they are selfless and committed to being of service to their community. Luckily for us, Bread for the City is a part of that community!

Hi everyone!
I’m Ashley, a summer intern here at Bread for the City.
Usually, I’m sitting behind a desk in the development department helping with some behind the scenes work pertaining to a lot of interesting communications management tasks. Part of my responsibility is to know what goes on at Bread for the City, and so I took a day to step away from my desk to join the BFC staff and volunteers at City Orchard.
Bread for the City will be closed for all services on Monday, October 14 in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
