We are thrilled to announce that Bread for the City, in partnership with DC Greens, has been honored as a joint recipient of the prestigious 2024 John Benjamin Nichols Award at the MSDC Capital Healthcare Honors! This esteemed recognition celebrates the remarkable impact of our Produce RX program, which continues to make healthy food accessible to countless residents of Washington, D.C.
Produce Rx is an innovative initiative developed by Bread for the City in collaboration with DC Greens, a nonprofit committed to promoting health equity and ensuring access to nutritious food for all. Through this program, doctors at Bread for the City’s health clinic prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables to patients diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or at risk of developing these conditions. Additionally, patients receive prepaid cards with funds each month – specifically for purchasing fresh produce from participating Giant, Safeway, and Walmart stores.
The John Benjamin Nichols Award recognizes organizations and individuals who have made exceptional contributions toward advancing community health. Established in 1953, previous recipients include notable entities such as The Junior League of Washington, Meals on Wheels, and Mary’s Center. We are honored to join this distinguished list.
Bread for the City extends a huge thank you to MSDC for this significant opportunity and recognition!
