Bread for the City’s First Job Fair a Success!
June 30, 2017 by BFC in In the Community Social Services
Bread for the City hosted its first Job and Information Fair on Friday, June 16 and we’re so excited about the results!
Organized by our awesome Representative Payee Coordinator (and maven of our job board!) Shanta Hendry, the fair was designed to bring together a number of different companies and services agencies to give job-seekers the resources they need to get started. We had eight (8) organizations in attendance: Department of Employment Services, SafeLink, United Planning Organization, Washington Law Center, Job Corps, Goodwill Industries, Events DC and BFC PEP Program. Sixty people came and were able to apply for jobs on the spot and receive information about future opportunities. Six participants even got hired on the spot by our partners at SafeLink!
The job seekers themselves were pleased with the event. Many indicated that they learned of opportunities that they were not aware of until they attended the fair, and even when there wasn’t a job opportunity that was the right fit, they were also able to get referrals to other other agencies for job information.
Alongside the job seekers themselves, the organizations in attendance were pleased at the turnout and excited to participate again in the future. Events DC had an especially productive day, receiving numerous completed applications. Their recruiter lives in the Shaw neighborhood, home of our NW Center, and noted that it was imperative that Events DC supported the event, especially since they do recruitment for the Washington Convention Center which is right down the street.
As Shanta says, “Thank you BFC for allowing me do me what I do best. Improving the lives of others is my passion and when you find your passion your wheels continue to turn constantly.”
We hope this will be first of many successful events for job-seekers as we diversify the ways in which Bread for the City provides assistance to the DC Community. Stay tuned for details on Bread for the City’s next Job and Information Fair.
