Bread for the City’s Temporary Food Program Closure Transforms into a Triumph for the Community

Bread for the City, the leading food pantry in Washington, DC, faced a challenging decision on March 20. After three years of increased service to the community during the pandemic, coping with loss, and undertaking planning and reflection, the organization made the difficult choice to temporarily close its Northwest Center pantry at 1525 7th Street NW and the Michelle Obama Southeast Center pantry at 1700 Good Hope Road SE, allowing its dedicated staff to rest and mourn.

Bread for the City (BFC) is excited to announce its annual Holiday Helpings program, a nearly thirty-year tradition that supports area DC families in need through the holidays. Last year, the program transitioned from its tradition of giving out turkeys and other staple holiday food items to embrace a necessary direction to better support over 16,000 DC households by providing critical monetary resources.  In alignment with last year’s progression, BFC will work this year to increase its support in communities hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday we breathed, today we continue the fight for real Justice

The murder trial of Derek Chauvin ended yesterday with an appropriate yet atypical measure of accountability: guilty on all counts. Still, justice is far from done. George Floyd, whose life was taken over a $20 bill, is still gone, and in the weeks leading up to today’s verdict, the murders of many others including Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, and in the DC area, James Johnson and Dominique Williams were all committed by police officers.
