It’s a Goaaaaaaaal for the City!
November 27, 2017 by BFC in Food Program Holiday Helpings Volunteering
On November 16th, we had several special visitors stop by! Four players from D.C. United visited our NW Center food pantry to support our Holiday Helpings program. Steve Birnbaum, Kofi Opare, Nick DeLeon, and Chris Durkin packed and distributed dozens of holiday meal kits, all of which include a turkey with all the trimmings, to our clients. The guys worked hard to keep up with the infamously long line in our food pantry during this time of year, but also enjoyed one on one time with clients and staff. Lots of selfies included!
We had a chance to sit down with Steve, Kofi, Nick, and Chris afterward to ask a couple questions:
Why is it important to give back to your community?
Chris Durkin: As a club, it is important to us that we take care of our city. And being here today is a great way to do that.
Kofi Opare: The city does a lot for us as a team and we are in a fortunate position as soccer players that we can help out. Coming to Bread for the City gives us an appreciation for what we have and is a reminder that not everyone is fortunate to always have food in their fridge.
What are your plans for the holidays?
Steve Birnbaum: Time with family. That is a big part of our lives.
Nick DeLeon: I’m headed home to Arizona to be with my family. I’m looking forward to the quality time.
Having D.C. United volunteer with us at Bread for the City was such a thrill for our staff and clients. Community leaders that take the time to give back to their city are extremely uplifting to our clients that are experiencing poverty and hardships every day. We are grateful for our partnership with D.C.United, and for all their hard work on the 16th!
