Bread for the City has faced extraordinary challenges and opportunities over the past few years. During this time, we strategically expanded, opening a new state-of-the-art center in the heart of Southeast DC. In the face of the pandemic, we not only maintained but dramatically increased our service levels and fundraising, achieving historic milestones in both.

Now, we are confronting a new challenge: a reduction in COVID-era funding amidst a continued and, at times, rising demand for our services, all while our community members face their own benefit cuts and resource shortages. In response to these national and local shifts in funding, we have had to make the difficult decision to reduce our staff by 13% to ensure our sustainability and continued service to the DC community.

This decision was made after exhausting all other measures to reduce expenses, including suspending our food pantry delivery program, enacting a hiring freeze, and implementing additional budget cuts. We recognize this is a challenging time for our Bread for the City community. Our team is the heart of our work, and we are committed to supporting the dedicated staff members affected by this transition.

Despite these challenges, our commitment to the mission remains steadfast. Our core services remain strong and service levels will not be affected. We appreciate the support of our donors and community partners and look forward to navigating this complex landscape together, with the shared goal of continuing our vital work in Washington, DC.
