Holiday Market

Bread for the City is planning the opening of its first holiday market with a focus on socially-conscious food and craft vendors of color from the DC region. Recent changes in the development of the “new Washington” have left African American merchants out of real estate opportunities afforded others and particularly the holiday market scene within the northwest corridor of the city, and the goal of this market is to create an opportunity for low-income vendors of color.

With a convenient, prominent and well trafficked real estate location, the Cooperative Holiday Market located in BFC’s Northwest Center can afford some budding and often disenfranchised entrepreneurs of color the opportunity to showcase their quality holiday items at an affordable cost. There will be a mix of pay and no-to-low pay crafts, food, and services including pantry, therapeutic, and social services provided by nonprofit partners.

We hope that you will visit the market!

Friday, December 14: 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Saturday, December 15: Noon – 8:00 pm

Sunday, December 16: Noon – 5:00 pm

The market will have vendor stations with food and crafts for purchase. Expected highlights of the market include:

  • A Dignity Tree.
  • A Woke Santa.
  • A service area for various workshops or therapies, such as holiday therapy.
  • Music and live performances.
  • Complimentary popcorn and apple fritters.
  • A Bread for the City donation station with opportunities to support Holiday Helpings.

Want to get involved?

We are seeking volunteers, who may be asked to help decorate our 1st annual 10′ Dignity tree, distribute clothing, collect donations from guests, sit in as our so called “Woke Santa,” setup and shutdown of vendor booths, and serve as a general host or hostess for the markets.

Please contact Elijah Joy to get involved at ejoy@breadforthecity.org.
