Holiday Helpings is happening now through November 26th!

For 32 years, Bread for the City’s Holiday Helpings program has stood as a beacon of hope and support for thousands of families across Washington, DC. As the holiday season approaches, it is a time when we reflect on the importance of community, togetherness, and the simple joy of sharing a meal with loved ones. Yet, for many families in our city, the holidays can be a time of stress and uncertainty as they struggle to afford the essentials that make this season special, especially as prices at the grocery store remain high due to inflation.

This year, we have set a goal to provide a special holiday meal, including a whole turkey or chicken, holiday fixings, and produce, to 12,000 families across Washington, DC.

Use our toolkit to spread the word and the joy during Holiday Helpings!

Frequently Asked Questions

Holiday Helpings is an annual seasonal program led by Bread for the City’s Food team. It is designed to help our community members resource their needs as we prepare to celebrate the holidays. Now in its 32nd year, Holiday Helpings provides a turkey (or a chicken), holiday fixings, and seasonal fresh produce during the month of November for thousands of DC families living on low income.

At Bread for the City, we believe that no one should go without. That’s why we’re inviting you to fill a holiday table this Thanksgiving! Our mission is to provide supportive services to DC families with dignity and respect, and what better way to do that than to be there for them during the holiday season?

Bread for the City seeks to provide 12,000 households with their Thanksgiving turkey, or chicken, and holiday groceries to provide our community with the staples they need to celebrate Thanksgiving their way – should that mean cornbread stuffing and yams, or extra green beans and grandma’s prized casserole recipe. Providing groceries helps our community members to celebrate their traditions at home with loved ones.

To support 12,000 households this year, Bread for the City needs to raise $1,000,000 in contributions. This includes the food cost per family, staffing and delivery costs to distribute Holiday Helpings groceries to seniors and those living with disabilities at their homes, and distribution at both of our community centers.
