The summer may have looked a little different this year, to say the least, but there was definitely a shining moment for Bread for the City that will always be remembered — being gifted a new car thanks to gettacar and NBA superstar, Carmelo Anthony! Gettacar, a Philadelphia based online car buying company, launched their operations in DC this summer and immediately took steps to become a contributing member of the BFC mission and our community.

On July 24, in a ceremony at our Northwest Center, gettacar Co-Founder and Head of Marketing Jake Levin presented the keys to a 2017 Ford Escape SE to our CEO, George A. Jones. And the magic didn’t end there. After the giveaway, the team rolled up their sleeves and started packing grocery bags for our client home deliveries to be transported in–you guessed it–our new Ford Escape!

With our food program transitioning to a delivery model in March so clients could safely continue receiving groceries and essential supplies, there is no doubt this donation came at a crucial time: supporting our efforts to provide deliveries of food and supplies, including diapers, to families sheltering at home. “This generous gift will help us to grow our food delivery program, which provides nearly 15,000 families and seniors each month with groceries. Supporting our community with home grocery delivery is one way we can help stop coronavirus, but it’s also best for our clients: saving them time and money so that they can focus on getting out of poverty,” shared Jones. 

Due to NBA commitments, Carmelo Anthony joined the festivities virtually with a video message, which you can check out here! This is the second time that gettacar and the Portland Trail Blazers forward have given away a car to make a difference in the lives of families. In January they teamed up to donate a car to a Maryland mother so she could travel to her daughter’s college basketball games! We call that a true “dream team.”
