Workforce Development Café: One Year Anniversary

One year ago, Bread for the City opened the doors of its Workforce Development Café, creating a welcoming space where community members could gain skills, build confidence, and move toward sustainable employment. On March 12, we celebrated the program’s first anniversary—and the many stories of resilience, growth, and opportunity that have taken shape within its walls.

The Workforce Café was designed to be more than a traditional job training center. It’s a place where individuals navigating the challenges of unemployment or career transitions can find both practical support and a sense of community.

Over the past year, the program has already made a meaningful impact: 381 courses completed, with participants earning 60 certifications and certificates. Many have earned valuable industry credentials, including 40 dual industry certificates in hospitality and forklifting. While others have gained professional development skills that prepare them for long-term success.

For many participants, the Workforce Café has become a critical resource during an often overwhelming job search.

During the one-year anniversary celebration, several participants shared that the café is more than just a place to prepare for interviews—it’s a place where they find hope and connection.

Bread for the City has always been committed to meeting people where they are, and the Workforce Café embodies that philosophy. Participants described the space as a true one-stop hub, where they can search for jobs, connect with career coaches, pick up groceries, take a yoga class, or participate in other activities that help them recharge when the pressures of job hunting feel heavy.

This holistic approach is intentional. The Workforce Café provides career training, professional development, and wrap-around services that support both professional and personal growth. By addressing barriers and building skills simultaneously, the program helps individuals move toward long-term stability and opportunity.

In its first year alone, nine participants have already secured employment, and dozens more have earned certifications that open doors to new career pathways.

None of this progress would be possible without the generosity of partners who believe in Bread for the City’s mission. We are deeply grateful to our major sponsors MGM Resorts International and TD Charitable Foundation, whose generous support helped make the Workforce Development Café possible.

Because of our donors, volunteers, and partners, this program has become a space where participants leave feeling supported, empowered, and inspired about their future.

And this is only the beginning!

As we look toward the future, Bread for the City remains committed to expanding opportunities for job training, professional development, and community connection—ensuring that even more individuals have access to the resources they need to be empowered to build stable and fulfilling careers.

Together, we are creating pathways to opportunity—one story, one skill, and one job at a time.
