An Unforgettable Evening: Together We Rise Gala Recap

On Saturday, May 10, more than 300 community members, supporters, and changemakers gathered in Washington, DC, for an evening of reflection, joy, and recommitment. Together We Rise wasn’t just a celebration — it was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we rise as one.

At a time when so many of our neighbors — predominantly Black and low-income DC residents — continue to face profound inequities, our community came together in solidarity. We celebrated Bread for the City’s mission and renewed our shared commitment to building a more just and compassionate city.

From the moment guests arrived, the night buzzed with warmth and connection. Attendees contributed to a community quilt installation, tested their luck in the raffle, and enjoyed live music from a cellist playing hip-hop. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with purpose.

The evening’s program, hosted by Britt Waters, Lifestyle host and Traffic Anchor with WJLA-TV and In-game host for the Washington Wizards, delivered moments of deep emotion and powerful inspiration. International Poetry Slam Champion Gayle Danley moved us with a beautiful poem weaving motherhood and the giving nature of community care together into a moving piece. Client speakers Deitrice H. and Vernon S. shared their journeys with courage and grace, offering a moving testament to the impact of holistic, dignified care:

“When I was pregnant with my youngest child, I got care from Bread for the City. I went in thinking it was going to be basic — a few appointments, some prescriptions. But instead, I got someone who actually cared… That kind of care — that kind of humanity — is rare. And it made me feel like I existed. No longer invisible. Like my life and my children’s lives are worth investing in.”

– Deitrice H.

“When I came home from ten years of incarceration, I returned to a city that didn’t feel like mine anymore… But Bread for the City reminded me that I still had a place here. That I still mattered… They don’t just offer services. They offer healing.”

– Vernon S.

With energy and charm, auctioneer BJ Jennings rallied the crowd, helping us raise more than $450,000 in our All in a Week’s Work challenge — enough to fund Bread for the City’s operations for an entire week and then some! This milestone was made possible by the generosity of our community and two matching gifts from Amazon and an anonymous donor.

One of the most memorable moments of the night came from our keynote speaker, former U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. He offered a powerful call to action — urging us not just to endure injustice, but to actively resist it:

“We cannot afford to look away. Because the further we drift from fact and truth… the more liable we become to repeat the worst parts of our past… Fortunately, there are those of us who know better. And we are not going to go quietly.”

– Eric H. Holder, Jr.

After the program, the celebration continued with dancing, laughter, and joy. Guests received custom haikus by Haikuists, joined hands in line dances, and picked up mini flower bouquets designed by Quince Blossom Ridge as they said goodbye.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our attendees and sponsors, we raised an astounding $1,585,648.82 to support Bread for the City’s wraparound services — including food, clothing, medical care, legal support, social services, and more. Every dollar raised helps us move closer to a DC where all people can access the resources they need to live with dignity and thrive.

We’re filled with immense gratitude for every sponsor, volunteer, staff member, client, and guest who helped make Together We Rise a night to remember. Your belief in our work fuels our mission.

Thank you for rising with us.
