Washington, D.C. – Bread for the City is excited to be one of the nonprofit organizations that will be distributing the Moderna vaccine in the Nation’s Capital. The Moderna, NIAID vaccine is a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for use in the US for a limited population. We are expecting to receive 400 doses, 10 percent of which will be for Bread for the City’s frontline staff and medical providers. The bulk of the doses will be for DC area frontline staff and medical providers who will be referred by the DC Health Department.
“We are excited that the Moderna vaccine will go to numerous nonprofit organizations in DC, including Bread for the City,” said George Jones, CEO of Bread for the City. “This is a great opportunity to make sure that essential workers in the DC area are able to provide vital services to the community during the pandemic.”
Starting January 4th, Bread for the City will have afternoon clinics from 1- 4 pm for referred essential workers. We are hoping to give out the vaccines before the end of January. As soon as we have given out the first 400 doses we are looking forward to receiving the next shipment and working to get the vaccines out to our community.
Since the pandemic, Bread for the City has been providing free COVID-19 testing on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Northwest Center, no referral or appointment is required. In addition to testing, we provide free food assistance to DC residents who are struggling, including those who are impacted by COVID-related shutdowns.
Bread for the City is inviting reporters to come and film/report CEO and community leader George Jones getting the vaccine on Monday, December 28th at 1 pm. George Jones and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Randi Abramson will be available for comments and questions at this time.
