Guided by our values of dignity, respect, service, and justice, BFC has provided holistic, wrap-around service to empower Washington, DC, residents living with low income to determine their future and the future of their own communities since the 1970s. We are thrilled to share a pivotal milestone in our journey: unveiling our strategic plan for 2022-2027.
161. That is the number of people who have been killed in DC so far in 2023. We can no longer ignore the role of gun violence in homicides in our communities. In the last week alone, we have experienced two traumatic shootings at the doorstep of Bread for the City’s Southeast Center in Ward 8’s Fairlawn community. This is just one street in one neighborhood, but across DC, gun violence is destroying lives - from those killed or injured, to witnesses, and loved ones left behind to rebuild shattered families and communities.
"This is what I have been asking and hoping for, doing what others don't have the courage to do. I just thought [Bread for the City staff] weren't afraid. Go with people leading with fierceness.”
As we wind down this year, here are Bread for the City’s Top Moments of 2022. From everyone at Bread for the City, we wish you a gentle and restorative end to 2022 and a welcoming start to 2023!
Every morning, over 1,000 DC residents lined our streets, waiting for their opportunity to pick up these much-needed supplies. The continued financial impacts of the pandemic and the looming prospect of a recession, the numbers we greeted each day laid bare the growing, and significant, need of those living on low incomes here in DC. Our initial goal was to raise $1,200,000 to sponsor 12,000 families, but we quickly realized that there was a greater need. In just two days, we had gone through over 20% of our initial Holiday Helpings stock, and by day 13, as we closed the program for this year, we had served 16,000 families.
THRIVE East of the River provided $5,500 to nearly 600 families over the last two years. THRIVE's accomplishments join a symphony of successful guaranteed income pilots throughout the country-- it's been proven time after time that unconditional cash transfers help stabilize and mobilize those living with low incomes. But, moving from the pilot phase to an established guaranteed income program has proven to be a challenge for many pilots, as funding and navigation of benefits cliff issues have stalled many projects from continuing. THRIVE was an opportunity to change the narrative around guaranteed income programs; these programs are an equitable method of combating systemic injustices faced by marginalized people.
Today Bread for the City joins everyone who commemorates Juneteenth. Remembering Juneteenth allows an annual opportunity for America and American's to acknowledge the real harm done to Black people during the centuries of enslavement in this country. It's also an opportunity for us to move towards anti-racism and flight to eliminate the race-based socioeconomic disparities that still take place in our communities.
