October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to underscore the critical role of early detection, supportive care, and tailored resources for individuals affected by breast cancer. At Bread for the City, our Cancer Patient Navigator, Ivan Enriquez, provides essential guidance and compassionate support to our medical patients, ensuring they feel informed, empowered, and supported throughout their cancer care journey. We sat down with Ivan to learn more about his impactful role and how he helps our patients access life-saving care.
Can you tell us about your role as a Cancer Patient Navigator?
Ivan: My primary responsibility is ensuring our patients receive the screenings they need to catch cancer early. For women over 40, I prioritize recommending breast cancer screenings to detect changes before physical symptoms appear. I also coordinate other screenings—like colorectal and lung cancer—based on individual risk factors, ensuring comprehensive care.
But my role goes far beyond just scheduling appointments. I connect with patients through phone calls, texts, emails, and hospital updates to reduce any stress around their screenings and follow-ups. Many of our patients face significant barriers, so I work to accommodate their unique needs and make the experience as smooth as possible.
How do you support patients during breast cancer treatment?
Ivan: The journey through breast cancer treatment is challenging, both physically and emotionally. My role involves not only coordinating treatment but also helping patients feel supported mentally and emotionally. I refer patients to local support groups, and through partnerships like UberHealth, we offer free transportation to and from appointments, reducing a common logistical hurdle.
For those without insurance, we connect patients with Project WISH, which provides free mammograms. I guide them through the application process, ensuring they have access to these crucial services without added stress.
What challenges do patients commonly face, and how do you help them overcome these?
Ivan: Many breast cancer patients struggle with attending their appointments, often due to financial concerns, emotional readiness, or unexpected life demands. I keep track of these challenges and work closely with providers to address them in subsequent appointments. It’s all about adapting our approach to meet each patient where they are.
What sets Bread for the City apart in cancer care?
Ivan: Bread for the City is deeply committed to a holistic, inclusive approach to healthcare. We welcome patients of all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender identity, or income level. This commitment allows us to provide breast cancer patients with personalized care that addresses their unique challenges, empowering them to feel in control of their health journey.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to take charge of their health?
Ivan: Early detection is crucial. Routine mammograms and follow-up screenings are key to catching cancer early. One common misconception I hear is that one mammogram is enough; however, patients may need additional imaging based on initial results. I emphasize the importance of regular screenings and help our medical patients understand the value of a proactive approach to their health.
How does Bread for the City serve underserved communities specifically?
Ivan: Empathy and active listening are the foundation of our work with underserved communities. Many patients face complex obstacles that affect their ability to seek healthcare, and understanding these barriers is essential to developing effective, accessible treatment plans.
What message would you give to someone newly diagnosed with cancer?
Ivan: If you’ve recently been diagnosed, please know you’re not alone. I am here to help you navigate the journey ahead step by step. Our goal is to simplify what can feel overwhelming, providing steady guidance and support every step of the way.
At Bread for the City, our Cancer Patient Navigator plays a vital role in ensuring that all patients, regardless of background or income, receive compassionate and comprehensive cancer care.
