At Bread for the City, we are committed to empowering our community through various programs and initiatives. Recently, we had the honor of showcasing a remarkable display of creativity, resilience, and solidarity at Work in Progress: A Liberation Quilt Exhibit. This exhibit featured the stunning works of regular participants from our community empowerment classes, who spent months crafting their unique liberation quilts.
Bread for the City attorney Allison Miles-Lee had the opportunity to testify at a Council roundtable hearing on the DC Access System, the platform used for public benefits and medical insurance application and processing, and the operations of DHS/DHCF. Bread for the City (BFC) has been awarded a five-year extension on our DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) funded Representative Payee contract! We have been entrusted to expand our program capacity from 867 to 1,300 clients, reflecting the growing need for our services in the DC community.

With over two decades of experience in grassroots organizing and advocacy, Ría has been at the forefront of empowering Black and Latino communities. Their journey has seen them engage in a spectrum of movements, from the Labor movement to Occupy Wall Street and, more recently, providing invaluable legal support to various social justice movements. In their new role as Associate Director, Ría will play a pivotal role in steering our organizing efforts providing supervision, guidance, and direction to our team. They will also spearhead political education initiatives within Bread for the City, fostering a deeper understanding of systemic issues and organizing opportunities among staff, leadership, and clients.
