This year, Bread for the City changed its strategy for Holiday Helpings, a 30+ year tradition for an almost 50-year-old organization. Holiday Helpings in 2020 was about standing on the pillars of equity and inclusion by providing the resources for community members to have autonomy for their holiday plans. Instead of turkeys and hams, we gave families and individuals gift cards; maybe a turkey or ham is not truly what they needed or wanted this holiday season, maybe paying a past due bill, buying groceries, buying winter gear, purchasing diapers, or filling up the car with gas is the priority.
Thank you for supporting Holiday Helpings this year and helping us provide gift cards to families and individuals who are struggling during the pandemic. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Alston & Bird LLP is a proud supporter of Bread for the City. Each year, their team comes together to create a fundraising drive for Holiday Helpings in addition to their community volunteer efforts, and thanks to their incredible dedication to the program and BFC’s clients, they helped make a vital resource possible for over 735 DC residents and their families this holiday season. Learn how they get in the spirit each year for Holiday Helpings, and what the program also means for them.
The Vaughan family has been participating in the Holiday Helpings program for many years. It gives both boys an opportunity to connect with friends and family with whom they have missed during this pandemic to talk to them about a really good cause.
Our Corporate Partners at Perkins Coie have a longstanding date with Holiday Helpings, joining us each year in support of the program by hosting a fundraising drive, rallying their communities, and volunteering to help us provide services. If you missed the Holiday Helpings Virtual Halftime Show and Step Rally, you can watch it here. It featured special guests, a performance from Sweet Honey and the Rock, and surprises from celebrities. It was hosted by Kevin Blackistone from The Washington Post and ESPN's Around the Horn, and Britt Waters, host of the Washington Wizards and Mystics.
This is the time of year that Bread for City helps make the holidays a little more special for thousands of DC families. Giving for Holiday Helpings is a holiday tradition at my house, and I hope it is at yours, too! For me, it’s as though my holidays don’t begin until I do some volunteering and make a donation for Holiday Helpings.
Our CEO George Jones reminds everyone about Holiday Helpings. Your support is still needed. Holiday Helpings this year is about turning tradition into progress. Due to these unprecedented times, our community members need more options than just a holiday meal. #HolidayHelpings
Bread for the City Board Member Leonard Edwards explains the importance of donating to our Holiday Helpings program this year.
Our community members are in deep need due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many low-income families are struggling with employment, food security, and mental health. The holiday season is here, but celebrating with family and friends may not be a priority to everyone. Holiday Helpings this year is about turning tradition into progress, we’re providing the necessary tools for people to make their own decisions. This year Lauren Taylor, Representative Payee Benefits Coordinator, created a classy page to help raise funds for Holiday Helpings. We got the chance to speak with Lauren about her participation this year.
