What made you want to bring your services to Community Empowered?
“Everyone deserves a chance to explore hobbies and de-stress. People with wealth, which DC is full of, have easy access to leisure activites. I wanted to bring that same opportunity to Bread for the City clients. Plus, so many of our clients are dealing with stress and trauma, both from their past and day-to-day. Yoga can help with that, especially when it’s paired with the other services BFC offers to meet basic needs.”
Is experience required for your class?
“I gear my class toward beginners! Yoga isn’t just for a certain body type, and you don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy athletic brands to get something out of it. Just showing up, with an open mind, is the only requirement.”
What have you learned about Bread for the City?
“Dignity is a core value at BFC, and the Community Empowered program provides just that–a place for people to come and work on themselves in a judgment-free place, to know that they deserve time to get out of survival mode for even just an hour, to know that they are valued.”
When are your classes?
“I am at our Southeast Center every Wednesday, from 2-3 pm! Yoga mats and other gear are provided.”
