As the country braces for a federal government shutdown on Sunday, October 1st, Bread for the City’s Food Pantry will remain steadfast in its commitment to keeping our doors “open for any and all,” shares Trazy Collins, Food and Clothing Director. As we did during the major shutdown in 2019, Bread for the City will extend its support to federal employees in need. Our services will be accessible to all Washington, DC residents, offering a five-day supply of food, including frozen meat and fresh produce, once a month. Additionally, as additional resources become available, we will be sure to provide information.
We welcome you to visit us in person! Our food pantry will operate from Monday to Thursday, with hours from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. You will find us at two convenient locations: 1700 Good Hope RD SE, DC, and 1525 7th St NW, DC. To receive the maximum food allotment, please bring proof of household size when you visit our food pantries (for example, lease, school records, etc.)
Bread for the City will also invite those impacted by the shutdown to offset household costs by utilizing our free Clothing Boutique and diaper program. Boutique appointments will be available on Tuesday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please visit our website to book an appointment. Diaper pick-up will be at the Southeast Center at 1700 Good Hope Rd SE on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please call 202-301-1657 for detailed information on requesting diapers and current availability. DC residents will be able to receive free diapers once a month.
Bread for the City invites you to volunteer and donate.
Given the additional surge in demand for our services, we will seek volunteers – individuals or groups – to help organize and pack food. We will also invite furloughed employees to join us as volunteers during this critical time. Our supporters are indispensable in operating our services here at Bread for the City, and we deeply appreciate every bit of your generosity.
To support a family impacted by the government shutdown, make a donation today! No donation is too small, and every dollar will go directly toward aiding our community members in need. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by this government shutdown.
Please make a difference by volunteering with us or making a donation.
